Pourquoi cette variante
Choisissez-la si
Balances your priorities with a 1639€ price tag and a 39W idle draw.
Ce qu'elle sacrifie
- Not specialized: it does not push any single dimension (value, silence, expansion) to the extreme.
Comment les pièces ont été choisies
- AMD Ryzen 5 5500: 6 cores / 12 threads covers the 6 cores needed with headroom.
- Motherboard AMD B550 (AM4): matches the CPU socket and case size.
- RAM: 32GB DDR4 — meets the 24GB the workload requires.
Pourquoi pas les autres
- Smart build — best all-round beats "Performance build — maximum capability" on performance -25, value +6, expandability +23 — that is why it is recommended for your priorities.

This build may struggle with the stated workload.
Critique
CPU close to the limit
The workload uses 100% of the CPU — little headroom for background tasks or growth.

Score de pérennité
Pérennité solide79/100
Strong future-proofing (79/100) — this build should stay relevant for years without major surgery.
Upgrade path75
DIY build — the CPU, motherboard and PSU can each be upgraded independently without replacing the whole system.
Expansion100
Expansion headroom: 2 PCIe slot(s), 2 M.2, 57 SATA, 0 drive bay(s), 2 RAM slot(s) free.
Storage growth90
Storage is 100% utilized with 0 free drive bay(s) and 57 free SATA port(s).
Memory growth75
2 RAM slot(s) free; memory is 75% utilized.
Networking55
Networking is 1000 Mbps, and a free PCIe slot can add a faster NIC later.
Replacement ease90
ATX form factor with standard, socketed components — most parts are easy to replace.
Workload change70
No GPU, but there is room (2 PCIe slot(s), PSU headroom 4x) to add one for AI/transcoding.
Score de risque homelab
Risque faible13/100
Low risk (13/100) — sensible redundancy and headroom; no single point of failure is exposed.
low
Single point of failure
Storage has redundancy (parity2) — a single drive failure does not take the array down.Solution: Continue a 3-2-1 backup strategy; redundancy is not a backup.
low
Storage risk
7 NAS-rated hard drive(s) — rated for 24/7 operation.Solution: Keep drives cool and monitor SMART health.
low
Data loss risk
Redundancy protects against drive failure, though it is not a substitute for backups.Solution: Follow a 3-2-1 backup rule: at least one copy off the box.
low
Power risk
PSU is 500W, peak load 125W (25%).Solution: PSU sizing leaves healthy headroom for spikes and future parts.
medium
Network risk
Single 1000 Mbps NIC — a switch/port failure takes the box fully offline, and multi-user media can saturate 1000 Mbps.Solution: Consider a second NIC or a managed switch; for heavy media, plan for 2.5/10G before the build.
low
Expansion risk
2 PCIe, 2 M.2, 57 SATA, 0 bays free.Solution: Healthy room for future drives, NICs and accelerators.
low
Upgrade risk
2022 platform — current generation with a forward-looking socket/feature set.Solution: Buy for the workload, not the socket — upgrade paths are a bonus, not a guarantee.

Critique
Check the balance
This build may struggle with the stated workload.Action: Reconsider the config for the stated workload or budget before buying.balance
Critique
CPU close to the limit
The workload uses 100% of the CPU — little headroom for background tasks or growth.Action: Consider a stronger CPU or drop a secondary workload.compute
Optimisation
Plan faster networking
1G networking is fine today but will bottleneck multi-user media or big NAS transfers at 80TB.Action: Budget for a 2.5G/10G NIC and switch later, or spec it now.network
Optionnel
Add a UPS
An always-on server holding data should survive power blips.Action: Add a line-interactive UPS sized for the build's peak draw (≥ 10 min at typical load for a clean shutdown).power
Optionnel
Keep a backup off-box
Redundancy inside the box does not survive fire, theft or a whole-array fault.Action: Mirror the important data to an external drive, a second box, or cloud.storage
Futur
RAM expansion available
2 RAM slot(s) free for a later upgrade.Action: Leave them free until the workload actually grows.memory
Futur
PCIe slot available
2 free PCIe slot(s) for a NIC, HBA or GPU later.Action: Use it for a 10G NIC, extra HBA, or an accelerator when the need appears.expansion
Ce qui devient la limite
Storage nearly full is the most likely thing to date this build within 1-2y.
1-2y
Storage nearly full
Pourquoi: 100% of raw capacity is already in use — media libraries and backups grow fast.Que faire: Expanding is easy: add a drive to the free bays/ports.
1-2y
CPU is the next bottleneck
Pourquoi: The CPU runs at 100% of capacity — new services or more users will hit the wall first.Que faire: Consider a stronger CPU within the same socket generation while it is still cheap.
3-5y
1G networking becomes the ceiling
Pourquoi: A 1000 Mbps link will cap NAS transfers and multi-user media before the CPU or disks do.Que faire: Add a 2.5G/10G NIC when the switch investment makes sense.
Ce qui vous limitera d'abord
CPU is the closest to its limit (100% of capacity in use) — it will likely force the next upgrade.
