Why this variant
Choose it if
Balances your priorities with a 632€ price tag and a 9W idle draw.
It sacrifices
- Not specialized: it does not push any single dimension (value, silence, expansion) to the extreme.
How the parts were chosen
- GEEKOM A5 — AMD Ryzen 5 7430U: 12 threads, 16GB RAM, 7W idle — a complete, efficient prebuilt for this workload.
- Turnkey: no assembly, smaller footprint, lower energy than a custom build.
Why not the others
- Smart build — best all-round beats "Build yourself — for comparison" on performance +8, efficiency +26, expandability -34, silence +40, longevity +20 — that is why it is recommended for your priorities.

Future-proof score
Limited future-proofing42/100
Limited future-proofing (42/100) — expect to upgrade or rebuild sooner rather than later.
Upgrade path40
Prebuilt platform — the CPU/motherboard are not swappable in the usual sense, so the upgrade path is limited to RAM/storage/PCIe.
Expansion34
Expansion headroom: 0 PCIe slot(s), 1 M.2, 1 SATA, 1 drive bay(s), 1 RAM slot(s) free.
Storage growth50
Storage is 63% utilized with 1 free drive bay(s) and 1 free SATA port(s).
Memory growth55
1 RAM slot(s) free; memory is 33% utilized.
Networking55
Networking is 1000 Mbps.
Replacement ease30
Prebuilt — proprietary parts can make replacement harder.
Workload change30
No GPU and little room to add one — demanding AI/transcoding workloads would be out of reach.
Homelab Risk Score
Elevated risk51/100
Elevated risk (51/100) — several items should be addressed before purchase.
high
Single point of failure
Storage has no redundancy (2 drives, no mirror/parity) — a single drive failure exposes the array.Fix: Add at least a mirror (RAID 1/ZFS mirror) for irreplaceable data, or an additional parity drive for larger arrays.
low
Storage risk
1 NAS-rated hard drive(s) — rated for 24/7 operation.Fix: Keep drives cool and monitor SMART health.
critical
Data loss risk
2 drive(s), no redundancy, hard-drive media — the worst combination for keeping data safe.Fix: Add redundancy and an off-site/off-box backup for anything irreplaceable.
critical
Power risk
No PSU detected in the configuration.Fix: Add a PSU sized at ~1.5x the peak load for efficiency headroom.
medium
Network risk
Single 1000 Mbps NIC — a switch/port failure takes the box fully offline, and multi-user media can saturate 1000 Mbps.Fix: Consider a second NIC or a managed switch; for heavy media, plan for 2.5/10G before the build.
low
Expansion risk
0 PCIe, 1 M.2, 1 SATA, 1 bays free.Fix: Healthy room for future drives, NICs and accelerators.
low
Upgrade risk
Prebuilt platform — the next CPU generation will almost certainly require a new system.Fix: Buy for the workload, not the socket — upgrade paths are a bonus, not a guarantee.
Final build audit
Audit found 1 critical and 0 warning item(s) worth fixing before you buy.
1 Critical1 Optimization2 Optional2 Future
Critical
No storage redundancy
2 drive(s) with no mirror or parity for the data you plan to store.Action: Add at least a mirror for irreplaceable data before you migrate anything.storage
Optimization
Plan faster networking
1G networking is fine today but will bottleneck multi-user media or big NAS transfers at 6TB.Action: Budget for a 2.5G/10G NIC and switch later, or spec it now.network
Optional
Add a UPS
An always-on server holding data should survive power blips.Action: Add a line-interactive UPS sized for the build's peak draw (≥ 10 min at typical load for a clean shutdown).power
Optional
Keep a backup off-box
Redundancy inside the box does not survive fire, theft or a whole-array fault.Action: Mirror the important data to an external drive, a second box, or cloud.storage
Future
RAM expansion available
1 RAM slot(s) free for a later upgrade.Action: Leave them free until the workload actually grows.memory
Future
Drive bays remain
1 drive bay(s) free for future capacity.Action: Expand capacity in pairs (mirror/parity) when needed.storage
What becomes the limit
Storage growing is the most likely thing to date this build within 3-5y.
3-5y
Storage growing
Why: 63% of capacity in use — comfortable today, tighter over a few years. What to do: Plan the growth curve; keep at least one bay free for the next drive.
3-5y
1G networking becomes the ceiling
Why: A 1000 Mbps link will cap NAS transfers and multi-user media before the CPU or disks do.What to do: Factor a NIC into the next hardware purchase.
What limits you first
Storage is the closest to its limit (63% of capacity in use) — it will likely force the next upgrade.
