Why this variant

Choose it if

The lowest total price (962€) that still covers this workload properly — best price/quality ratio.

It sacrifices

No ECC memory — fine for home use, less ideal for bit-rot-sensitive archives.
Expansion headroom is trimmed: parts are chosen for price per capability.

How the parts were chosen

AMD Ryzen 5 5600GT: 6 cores / 12 threads covers the 6 cores needed with headroom.
Motherboard AMD B550 (AM4): matches the CPU socket and case size.
RAM: 16GB DDR4 — meets the 16GB the workload requires.

Why not the others

Value build — most for your money beats "Smart build — best all-round" on performance -19, longevity +10 — that is why it is recommended for your priorities.

Future-proof score

Strong future-proofing

79/100

Strong future-proofing (79/100) — this build should stay relevant for years without major surgery.

Upgrade path75

DIY build — the CPU, motherboard and PSU can each be upgraded independently without replacing the whole system.

Expansion100

Expansion headroom: 2 PCIe slot(s), 1 M.2, 62 SATA, 8 drive bay(s), 2 RAM slot(s) free.

Storage growth90

Storage is 82% utilized with 8 free drive bay(s) and 62 free SATA port(s).

Memory growth75

2 RAM slot(s) free; memory is 100% utilized.

Networking55

Networking is 1000 Mbps, and a free PCIe slot can add a faster NIC later.

Replacement ease90

ATX form factor with standard, socketed components — most parts are easy to replace.

Workload change70

No GPU (the iGPU handles transcoding), but there is room (2 PCIe slot(s), PSU headroom 5x) to add one for AI.

Homelab Risk Score

Low risk

16/100

Low risk (16/100) — sensible redundancy and headroom; no single point of failure is exposed.

low

Single point of failure

Storage has redundancy (mirror) — a single drive failure does not take the array down.Fix: Continue a 3-2-1 backup strategy; redundancy is not a backup.

medium

Storage risk

2 desktop hard drive(s) — not rated for 24/7 duty, vibration or heat; higher long-run failure risk.Fix: For an always-on system, prefer NAS/CMR-rated drives; monitor SMART and replace before the warranty ends.

low

Data loss risk

Redundancy protects against drive failure, though it is not a substitute for backups.Fix: Follow a 3-2-1 backup rule: at least one copy off the box.

low

Power risk

PSU is 500W, peak load 100W (20%).Fix: PSU sizing leaves healthy headroom for spikes and future parts.

medium

Network risk

Single 1000 Mbps NIC — a switch/port failure takes the box fully offline, and multi-user media can saturate 1000 Mbps.Fix: Consider a second NIC or a managed switch; for heavy media, plan for 2.5/10G before the build.

low

Expansion risk

2 PCIe, 1 M.2, 62 SATA, 8 bays free.Fix: Healthy room for future drives, NICs and accelerators.

low

Upgrade risk

2024 platform — current generation with a forward-looking socket/feature set.Fix: Buy for the workload, not the socket — upgrade paths are a bonus, not a guarantee.

Final build audit

Audit passed (0 critical, 0 warning) — mostly optional and future considerations remain.

2 Optimization2 Optional3 Future

Optimization

Use NAS-rated drives

Desktop drives in an always-on NAS/server role have higher long-run failure rates.Action: Prefer NAS/CMR-rated drives for 24/7 duty.storage

Optimization

Plan faster networking

1G networking is fine today but will bottleneck multi-user media or big NAS transfers at 32TB.Action: Budget for a 2.5G/10G NIC and switch later, or spec it now.network

Optional

Add a UPS

An always-on server holding data should survive power blips.Action: Add a line-interactive UPS sized for the build's peak draw (≥ 10 min at typical load for a clean shutdown).power

Optional

Keep a backup off-box

Redundancy inside the box does not survive fire, theft or a whole-array fault.Action: Mirror the important data to an external drive, a second box, or cloud.storage

Future

RAM expansion available

2 RAM slot(s) free for a later upgrade.Action: Leave them free until the workload actually grows.memory

Future

Drive bays remain

8 drive bay(s) free for future capacity.Action: Expand capacity in pairs (mirror/parity) when needed.storage

Future

PCIe slot available

2 free PCIe slot(s) for a NIC, HBA or GPU later.Action: Use it for a 10G NIC, extra HBA, or an accelerator when the need appears.expansion

What becomes the limit

RAM is tight is the most likely thing to date this build within 1-2y.

1-2y

RAM is tight

Why: Memory is 100% utilized — a growing workload will hit the ceiling quickly. What to do: Add the remaining RAM before prices change, while slots are free.

1-2y

Storage nearly full

Why: 82% of raw capacity is already in use — media libraries and backups grow fast. What to do: Expanding is easy: add a drive to the free bays/ports.

1-2y

CPU is the next bottleneck

Why: The CPU runs at 100% of capacity — new services or more users will hit the wall first. What to do: Consider a stronger CPU within the same socket generation while it is still cheap.

3-5y

1G networking becomes the ceiling

Why: A 1000 Mbps link will cap NAS transfers and multi-user media before the CPU or disks do.What to do: Add a 2.5G/10G NIC when the switch investment makes sense.
