Waarom deze variant

Kies deze als

Balances your priorities with a 2873€ price tag and a 58W idle draw.

Wat het opoffert

Not specialized: it does not push any single dimension (value, silence, expansion) to the extreme.

Hoe de onderdelen zijn gekozen

Intel Core i7 14700: 20 cores / 28 threads covers the 15 cores needed with headroom.
Motherboard Intel B760 (LGA 1700): matches the CPU socket and case size.
RAM: 64GB DDR5,DDR4 — meets the 48GB the workload requires.

Waarom niet de andere

All variants are close; the winner matches your priorities best.

Algemeen78

Toekomstbestendigheidsscore

Sterke toekomstbestendigheid

82/100

Strong future-proofing (82/100) — this build should stay relevant for years without major surgery.

Upgrade path75

DIY build — the CPU, motherboard and PSU can each be upgraded independently without replacing the whole system.

Expansion100

Expansion headroom: 2 PCIe slot(s), 6 M.2, 2 SATA, 0 drive bay(s), 2 RAM slot(s) free.

Storage growth70

Storage is 86% utilized with 0 free drive bay(s) and 2 free SATA port(s).

Memory growth75

2 RAM slot(s) free; memory is 75% utilized.

Networking80

Networking is 2500 Mbps, and a free PCIe slot can add a faster NIC later.

Replacement ease90

ATX form factor with standard, socketed components — most parts are easy to replace.

Workload change85

A 16GB GPU is present — AI and transcoding workloads are covered.

Homelab Risk Score

Laag risico

13/100

Low risk (13/100) — sensible redundancy and headroom; no single point of failure is exposed.

low

Single point of failure

Storage has redundancy (mirror) — a single drive failure does not take the array down.Oplossing: Continue a 3-2-1 backup strategy; redundancy is not a backup.

medium

Storage risk

2 desktop hard drive(s) — not rated for 24/7 duty, vibration or heat; higher long-run failure risk.Oplossing: For an always-on system, prefer NAS/CMR-rated drives; monitor SMART and replace before the warranty ends.

low

Data loss risk

Redundancy protects against drive failure, though it is not a substitute for backups.Oplossing: Follow a 3-2-1 backup rule: at least one copy off the box.

low

Power risk

PSU is 550W, peak load 294W (53%).Oplossing: PSU sizing leaves healthy headroom for spikes and future parts.

low

Network risk

Single 2500 Mbps NIC — a switch/port failure takes the box fully offline, and multi-user media can saturate 2500 Mbps.Oplossing: Consider a second NIC or a managed switch; for heavy media, plan for 2.5/10G before the build.

low

Expansion risk

2 PCIe, 6 M.2, 2 SATA, 0 bays free.Oplossing: Healthy room for future drives, NICs and accelerators.

low

Upgrade risk

2024 platform — current generation with a forward-looking socket/feature set.Oplossing: Buy for the workload, not the socket — upgrade paths are a bonus, not a guarantee.

Laatste build-audit

Audit passed (0 critical, 0 warning) — mostly optional and future considerations remain.

Optimalisatie

Use NAS-rated drives

Desktop drives in an always-on NAS/server role have higher long-run failure rates.Actie: Prefer NAS/CMR-rated drives for 24/7 duty.storage

Optioneel

Add a UPS

An always-on server holding data should survive power blips.Actie: Add a line-interactive UPS sized for the build's peak draw (≥ 10 min at typical load for a clean shutdown).power

Optioneel

Keep a backup off-box

Redundancy inside the box does not survive fire, theft or a whole-array fault.Actie: Mirror the important data to an external drive, a second box, or cloud.storage

Toekomst

RAM expansion available

2 RAM slot(s) free for a later upgrade.Actie: Leave them free until the workload actually grows.memory

Toekomst

PCIe slot available

2 free PCIe slot(s) for a NIC, HBA or GPU later.Actie: Use it for a 10G NIC, extra HBA, or an accelerator when the need appears.expansion

Wat de limiet wordt

Storage nearly full is the most likely thing to date this build within 1-2y.

1-2y

Storage nearly full

Waarom: 86% of raw capacity is already in use — media libraries and backups grow fast.Wat te doen: Expanding is easy: add a drive to the free bays/ports.
